Archbishop Burke appointed to head Vatican ‘Supreme Court’

  • Written by St. Joseph's Parish

.- Today the Holy Father appointed Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke as prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.  The archbishop, one of the leading experts of Canon law in the United States will leave the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Missouri to take up his new post in Rome near the end of August.

The appointment came on the same day that Pope Benedict named Cardinal Agostino Vallini, current prefect of the Supreme Tribunal, as the vicar general for the Diocese of Rome - the highest diocesan administrator.  The position was previously held by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, whose resignation was accepted by Benedict XVI upon reaching the age of 75.

In a statement to the archdiocese, the archbishop admitted that he was deeply humbled at the new opportunity to serve the Church.  “Although you will no longer pray for me as your archbishop, especially during the celebration of the Holy Mass, I ask your prayers for me, that I may faithfully and generously cooperate with God's grace in fulfilling my new responsibilities.”

“Leaving the service of the Church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis is most sad for me. It has been an honor and gift for me to serve the archdiocese over the past four years and five months. It had been my hope to serve here for a long time, but, as the bishop who called me to priestly ordination often remarked, ‘Man proposes, but God disposes.’ I trust that doing what our Holy Father has asked me to do will bring blessings to the Archdiocese of St. Louis and to me. St. Louis is a great archdiocese which will always have a treasured place in my heart.”

Kid S.L.A.M 2008

  • Written by St. Joseph's Parish

Kid S.L.A.M. 2008 was a great success. Many families and kids attended the free event to eat a hot dog, see the clowns, watch some "Saved Skaters" and listen to the Christian rock band "Bread of Stone". The P.C.C.W. donated $500.00 to the event which was used to buy hotdogs, root beer and a stipend for the "Saved Skaters" for gas to drive back to Minneapolis. Over 225 hot dogs were given away for free along with a few free sunburns. Many commented on how nice it was to see that this was a joint effort of several churches and were joyfully surprised that is was really free. Local business and the local churches did an outstanding job of raising the money and hosting this event. There is already talk of another one next summer.

Pope Benedict XVI Prayer At Ground Zero.

  • Written by Pope Benedict XVI

O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather today at this site, the scene of incredible violence and pain.

We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here --the heroic first-responders: our fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001.

We ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day, suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.

Pope Benedict XVI addresses the United Nations

  • Written by EWTN

Pope Benedict said Friday that respect for human rights is the key to solving many of the world’s problems.

Address to the United Nations General Assembly (source: EWTN.com)

Speaking first in French and then in English, the Holy Father delivered the following address to the General Assembly of the United Nations, 18 April 2008.

[In French]
Mr President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

As I begin my address to this Assembly, I would like first of all to express to you, Mr President, my sincere gratitude for your kind words. My thanks go also to the Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, for inviting me to visit the headquarters of this Organization and for the welcome that he has extended to me. I greet the Ambassadors and Diplomats from the Member States, and all those present. Through you, I greet the peoples who are represented here. They look to this institution to carry forward the founding inspiration to establish a “centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends” of peace and development (cf. Charter of the United Nations, article 1.2-1.4). As Pope John Paul II expressed it in 1995, the Organization should be “a moral centre where all the nations of the world feel at home and develop a shared awareness of being, as it were, a ‘family of nations’” (Address to the General Assembly of the United Nations on the 50th Anniversary of its Foundation, New York, 5 October 1995, 14).
