St. Julie's MISSION CHURCH - Owingsville, Kentucky
Owningsville is located about 50 miles east of
Lexington. The parish of St. Julie's has 31 family units on its membership roster and encompasses all of
Bath and
Menifee
Counties. The Church dates back to the late 1800's. During most of its history it was a Presbyterian Church. Because of declining membership in the 1960's, the church was put up for sale and purchased by the Diocese of Lexington on behalf of the few Catholic families that lived in the area.
Deacon Bill Grimes takes care of the day by day running of the church. Fr. Peter Richardson comes from
West Liberty, 50 miles away, each week. St. Julie's is very involved in the operation of Christian Social Services which provides food for the needy and runs a used clothing store for the benefit of those who can't afford to buy new clothes. The parish also operates New Hope Clinic, a medical outreach to the working poor of the county. There are 6,500 people in the county and New Hope Clinic has a client list of 1,200. Disability and unemployment are high and salaries are low. The disabled, unemployed and working poor compose half the population of the county. There is also a growing Hispanic presence in the community and Mass is now being celebrated monthly in Spanish. Sr. Dorothy has been hired by parishes in the area to work with the Hispanic community.
